Professional Development Opportunities
ONLINE 101
In ONLINE 101, you will experience the online class from the student perspective. ONLINE 101 is a "short course," and, as such, we cannot hope to cover all aspects of teaching and learning online. As a result, what I propose to do is give you a taste of what it is all about.
Online 101 lasts for five weeks. The class will be graded (based primarily on whether or not you carry out the assignments and on your contributions to class discussion). All participants completing the class will receive a certificate from the eLearning Center.
Online 101:
- Takes place online in the D2L class environment.
- Is cohort based to help you see how the learning community can be developed online.
- Is asynchronous -- you participate at a time and location that is convenient for you.
- Provides faculty with experience in online learning from the student perspective.
- Involves discussions based on readings related to teaching and learning online.
- Includes hands-on activities to help you effectively use the online environment in D2L.
- Is scheduled over a 6-week period.
- Should require only an hour or so of your time each week.
ONLINE 102
Online 102 can be used by faculty with little or no experience with D2L or by those who would like a "refresher" on using D2L for their classes. Online 102 is set up to be self-directed, with each participant determining when and how fast he/she will work. There will be a private discussion area created for each participant for one-on-one interaction with a facilitator. There is also the option for face-to-face interaction with staff from eLearning Support.
In Online 102, you will:
- Determine the materials that you want to use in your online class.
- Convert Word & PowerPoint files to the HTML version.
- Upload course files to the D2L class.
- Determine an organization format for the class in D2L.
- Create the Content area (Modules & Topics).
- Edit Topics (documents) as appropriate using the HTML editor.
- Create links to external web resources using the Links tool.
ONLINE 103
Online 103 can be used by faculty with little or no experience with D2L or by those who would like a "refresher" on using D2L for their classes. Online 103 is set up to be self-directed, with each participant determining when and how fast he/she will work. There will be a private discussion area created for each participant for one-on-one interaction with a facilitator. There is also the option for face-to-face interaction with staff from eLearning Support.
In Online 103, you will:
- Read several articles and view a PowerPoint related to the Learning Community and offer your point of view on each one.
- Begin creating D2L News items (on the class homepage).
- Create the Discussions area of your class.
- Practice using the Discussions tools to create and reply to discussion posts and then (a) do a search, (b) read multiple messages, and (c) delete a message.
ONLINE 104
In this class, you will learn how to use the D2L tools to create a variety of assessments in your own class.
In Online 104, you will:
-
Use the D2L Quizzes tool to create quizzes and exams for evaluating student progress in the class.
-
Use the D2L Dropbox tool to create folders for students to use to submit class assignment files and practice using this tool as you would in the actual class.
-
Read about classroom assessment and use the D2L Surveys tool to apply selected techniques in the class.
-
Use the D2L Surveys tool to create course and teacher evaluations for the class, as appropriate.
